A city lawyer was arrested by police after trying to bribe detectives with sh 900,000 in his efforts to free city sim card fraudsters.

The Thursday arrest was attributed to the actions by the attorney to want to free his five clients named Wilson Mugo Githinji, James Gitonga Maina, John Ngitho Kariuki, Samuel Njenga and Mbogo Kamau.

The culprits were on Wednesday August 12th nabbed in the CBD with over 21,00 registered and unregistered subscriber lines.

Sim cwhich were seized by police last Wednesday.

Their lawyer was therefore caught trying to convince investigators at Kasarani Police Station to release the five without charges but he was not lucky when they turned against him by raising an alarm.

Sources from the ground reported to this Homenews.co.ke desk that the attorney was in a rush to secure their release since they were at the time proceeding for an arraignment in court.

“The amount which was in Ksh 1,000 denomination has been documented by the Scenes of Crime personnel and kept as an exhibit,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) tweeted.

The lawyer will be facing several charges under the Bribery Act and the Penal Code. The DCI confirmed.

This incident is happening just a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta promised to put to an end electronic fraud which was on an increase in the country. He pin pointed Kamiti Maximum Prison as a notorious hotspot for fraudsters who collude with inmates to carry on with their evil actions.

Uhuru said he had a section of specialised officers to monitor what was going on in every corner of Kamiti Maximum Prison and other correctional center in the country which he said had become obvious hideout for such suspects.

And last Saturday August 12, the newly formed Special Weapons and Tactics SWAT team pounced on notorious fraudsters in Nairobi Central Business District.
