Wednesday, April 19, 2023 –Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Transport, and Public works Kipchumba Murkomen has banned night travel for school buses, countrywide.
The CS released the orders on Wednesday April 19 afternoon saying the increased rate of road carnage had triggered his department to act with speed.
Murkomen also said school vans, buses and matatus that are unroadworthy must be removed from the roads as soon as possible
“School transportation shall not be allowed to operate between 10 pm and 5am in line with the Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2017, effective immediately,” he said.
Additionally, Mr Murkomen directed that all school children must be allocated seats with functional seatbelts which they must put on at all times.
“In the implementation of the Intelligent Road Safety Management System (IRSMS), all heavy commercial operators must ensure vehicles with a tare weight of 3,049 Kgs and above are fitted with speed limiters,” he said.
He also went on to list more safety and security measures in his effort to curb road accidents around the country.
To ensure road users drive at the required speed, the Transport CS said all the 57 licensed speed limiter vendors must install approved gadgets that will transmit data to NTSA and the vendor servers so as to detect highway violations in real time.
He was saying this amid public uproar following deaths on major highways with the latest carnage having happened along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway claiming atleast six students enroute Nairobi from Vihiga.
