Wednesday, May 31, 2023 –Kenyans have called on Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja to address the issue of a bridge which is risking hundreds of lives both adults and minors in Kayole area.
Reacting to a video which was shared by a section of Kenyans on social media led by former gospel singer Daddy Owen, concerned netizens called upon Governor Sakaja to act with speed before things could get out of hand.
“Can you imagine the number of people who have ended up in the sewage after being mugged!” Jackson Michael commented.
On Wednesday May 31, in the video shared widely, the dangerous bridge was captured showing how it had no guards and which residents of Obama Estate risk lives while crossing over to and from the estate.
Our crosscheck established that it was built over overflowing raw sewage that swept through a number of settlements in the Eastern parts of the capital city, Nairobi.
“This is Nairobi, and the bridge is surprisingly used by school-going children who cross it every morning. Something should be done immediately to remedy the dangerous situation,” Singer Owen captioned the heart-wrenching video.
A resident then explained the length of danger to which people living there are exposed to as well as the health questions brought around by the flowing sewage.
“This is known as Siranga Bridge, and it connects Obama and Kayole Estates, including adjacent schools,” a man explained in the viral video shared on timelines.
The about 100-meter-long concrete bridge carries a single lane of human traffic and further, it is a major transportation artery used by hundreds of children who attend nearby schools.
In 2016, this bridge was closed down for repairs after it was damaged by vandals who stole rails, grills and metallic handles. The repairs would be completed in 2017, and the bridge was reopened for use.
However, the crucial infrastructure was once again vandalised by scrap metal dealers and the children were left exposed to the full danger again and, since then, this has remained a night mare for residents.
Obama Area is on Kangundo Road before Njiru area.
