Sunday, August 14, 2022 –Johnson Sakaja has won the Nairobi gubernatorial seat under his United Democratic Alliance UDA Party.
The County Returning Officer CRO in Nairobi announced the former senator as the winner beating his closest rival, Mr. Polycarp Igathe with close to 100,000 votes.
Mr. Sakaja, despite controversies surrounding his academic qualifications, beat Igathe with 699,392 votes against Mr Igathe’s 573,516 in the just ended electoral exercise.
In previous opinion polls, Sakaja had already been projected as the probable winner with a comfortable lead against the corporate hotshot Igathe of Jubilee ruling Party.
During their recent gubernatorial debate, Sakaja accused Igathe of absconding his official duty when he resigned at the height of the historic poor Sonko leadership around the city.
For a couple of months now, Sakaja has had a taxing run for the covetous seat which included battling claims indicating he did not graduate from any recognised university.
Following the today’s(Sunday August 14) outcome as declared by the IEBC, Igathe quickly took to his social media account to thank his supporters as well as wished Sakaja well in his next job.
“I accept the decision of the people of Nairobi and thank all our supporters. The Governor of Nairobi is His Excellency Johnson Sakaja. Congratulations! God bless Kenya,” he wrote.
Others who emerged victors in the Nairobi County race include ODM Party Secretary General Edwin Sifuna(Senator position) and Esther Passaris(Woman Representative).
